History of Greyhounds:

Greyhounds enjoy a rich heritage dating back over 4,000 years. Initially bred for royalty and noblemen, this breed was a favorite of both Cleopatra and England’s Queen Elizabeth. Their unmistakable figures grace the walls and tombs of ancient Egypt and vases of ancient Greece. Greyhounds were introduced in the United States of America in the 1800’s to help farmers control the jackrabbit population, and greyhound racing developed as a result of popular neighborhood competitions.

They are Sighthounds

Unless in the house or a fenced in area, greyhounds need to ALWAYS be on a leash. If not leashed, your dog may run away or chase a small animal (squirrel, rabbit, or your neighbor’s cat). Not knowing about traffic, your greyhound is likely to be hit by a car or simply cannot find his or her way back home. Greyhounds hunt by sight, not scent. They can see up to ½ mile away, and can run at forty-five miles per hour.

About Greyhounds . . .

Intelligent, calm, graceful – greyhounds make wonderful companions. Thriving on love and attention, these good-natured, regal dogs reward their owners with a lifetime of unconditional love and affection.

Greyhounds are friendly by nature and socialize well as a result of interacting with other racing greyhounds in the kennel, which means that they accept other family pets. Many greyhounds live in total harmony with the family cat.

They are easy to train .

Greyhounds usually adapt very quickly to a new routine. Housebreaking is simply a matter of showing your greyhound the designated area, and then giving him or her a few days to adjust to your schedule.

They want to sleep indoors!

Greyhounds adore romping and frolicking outdoors, but after playtime, they belong indoors. They naturally have very little body fat and a thin coat that does not protect them against weather extremes. Greyhounds love comfort and will spend hours curled up on a blanket, dog bed, the couch, or their master’s bed, if permitted.
